Dr Louise
Winteringham

The remarkable Dr Louise Winteringham is working in our Translational Cancer Research Program. Louise and the team are looking at the mutations in DNA that cause cancer – and how those mutations can be treated.

The problem with treating cancer is that everybody’s cancer is a little bit different. Understanding what’s changing in the cells can help determine which targeted treatments will be best.

“For example, we’re accessing tumour samples from patients when they go into surgery to predict what treatment they will get for their cancer. We’ll be able to offer drugs or treatments that target those mutations or cellular changes.”

The key is knowing what mutations are driving the cancers.

For Louise, the dream is personalised treatment – not sometime in the way-off future, but in her lifetime.
