I’m Riding To Help Beat Cancer
Tragically last October a very close friend Kim passed away after losing his second battle against lymphoma. Six years previously he received his first diagnosis of stage 4 cancer which went into remission after many arduous months of chemotherapy.
Unfortunately just one month after his oncologist gave him the “5 year all clear” early last year, Kim was given the devastating news that his aggressive lymphoma was back. Sadly, this time the cancer failed to respond to a new chemotherapy regime and Kim’s condition deteriorated too rapidly for him to be a candidate for newer treatment options like stem cell or CAR-T therapy. Kim’s strength, bravery and determination were so inspirational and I feel privileged to have been with him during his journey. The personal toll on his loving wife, his mother, his children, grandchildren, family and friends is indelibly imprinted on us all.
Far from being unique, this is a story that is repeated many thousands of times every year in Australia and around the world. Everyone can relate to Kim’s story. My own mother died at 53 years from brain cancer. We are all touched in some way by cancer and we need to do better. That is why foundations like the Harry Perkins Institute in Western Australia are so important. We need to support these brilliant and committed medical researchers in the hope that new breakthroughs will improve the health outcomes and lives of cancer sufferers and their loved ones.
That is why I have been inspired by my friend Kim and his wonderful family to ride 200 kilometres on the 12th and 13th of October this year to raise funds for such an amazing cause as cancer research. I will be pedalling alongside fellow riders who have similar stories and are united in fundraising efforts to help make cancer non-lethal.
This will be my first ride but many riders return every year because they know that the funds we raise go back to the Perkins. It is also a worst kept secret that the Ride is the friendliest cycling charity event in Australia. Why not join me in making a difference?
Any contribution to my fundraising page will be accepted with heartfelt gratitude. Your generous support really matters.
We can all help to conquer cancer!
