I’M RIDING IN MEMORY OF My Dad, Sandoval
I'm riding in memory of my dad, Sandoval and celebrating the incredible women in my family who have faced breast cancer!
Cloudy Day
That is the title of one of the many songs I sing when I ride. Lately, it has been Cloudy Day by Tones and I.
When I won the opportunity to participate in the Road Nationals Gran Fondo, I sang Nothing Compares 2 U on repeat. It was such a wonderful experience that I registered to participate in the fun ride again this year.
There is something about being on two wheels that allows my mind to wander. Sometimes I sing, sometimes I think, sometimes I simply take in the road ahead. And sometimes, especially on the longer rides, there is a fair amount of physical pain.
But whatever that pain may be, tired legs, a sore back, aching shoulders, or simply wondering why on earth I thought riding this far was a good idea, it still doesn't compare to the pain so many people and their families experience when living with cancer.
That is one of the reasons I keep riding.
This year's ride is a little different for me. I am riding to celebrate the incredible women in my family who have survived breast cancer, and those who are still fighting. And, as always, there is a little bit of Dad riding with me too.
So, as the kilometres tick by, there will probably be a song playing in my head, some moments of questioning my life choices, and plenty of time for my mind to wander.
And I'll keep pedalling.
Cancer has shaped my life in more than one way, and this year, I’m riding not only in memory, but in celebration.
I’m taking on the 200km ride again to support life-saving cancer research, honouring my dad, Sandoval, who we lost to Glioblastoma 12 years ago. His strength continues to inspire me every day, and he is always part of the reason I ride.
This year also carries a different kind of purpose, filled with gratitude, admiration, and hope. I’m riding to celebrate the incredible cousins who have faced breast cancer with courage, resilience, and unwavering determination. Some have overcome it, some are still fighting, and all of them remind me what true strength looks like.
This ride is for remembrance and for celebration.
For those we miss.
For those still fighting.
For those who survived.
Research is what turns fear into hope and diagnosis into survival stories. 100% of funds raised go directly to the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, helping brilliant scientists continue their work toward better treatments and breakthroughs.
If you’re able to support my ride or share my page, you’re helping push that progress forward — for my family, for yours, and for everyone whose life has been touched by cancer.
Together, we ride for hope, for strength, and for the future.
