Australia’s biggest charity bike ride smashed its $4 million fundraising goal by almost $815,000 thanks to the amazing support of 1,000 riders and their friends and family.

The funds raised have already been put to work helping innovative cutting edge medical research find better ways fight stubborn cancers resistant to treatment.

Nearly 1000 cyclists rode from Mandurah to Perth’s Optus Stadium this past weekend, completing the 200km 2 day course of the MACA Cancer 200 Ride for Research.

Over $4.7 million has been raised so far at this year’s event and donations can still be made by visiting www.cancer200.org.au

Director of the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Professor Peter Leedman, says important new research will flow because of these funds.

“In our labs our research teams take on the most aggressive and stubborn cancers and have made enormous progress.

“In the last eight years through the support of our riders and corporate supporters including our major sponsor MACA, we have been able to fund ongoing research that makes a real difference for cancer patients.

“We have raised $36m from the ride which is Australia’s biggest charity bike ride. What an achievement by West Australians.

“At the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research there are more than 250 researchers from around the world investigating cancer and other debilitating diseases and funds from the ride will lead to wonderful new discoveries.”
