I’m on a mission to defeat cancer for me, for you, for everyone
Cancer has taken so much from us. Whether it is a loved one, family member, friend or closer to home, cancer is relentless. The 'closer to home' this year is me!
Just 6 weeks ago Gen and I were living our best life having just been to our son's wedding in England. Soon after we were soaking up the rare heatwave in London with a weekend at a lovely hotel with a rooftop pool and bar. Life was really good and with Amsterdam and the Greek Islands next, really life couldn't get better. We were right, it couldn't get better, but it certainly could get worse little did we know. The next day I was admitted to Emergency in Bristol and 4 days later was diagnosed with Cholangoiocarcinoma - cancer of either the bile duct or pancreas. I have a very long road ahead and am in the hands of the medical experts.
My plan, as with every year, was to put a stop to cancer by riding 200kms to raise vital funds for cancer research right here in WA at their amazing annual event. Due to treatment I am unable to cycle this year however I am on the ride of my life. Please be the wind beneath my sail, the grind in my pedal in my fight against this insiduous disease that strikes without warning.
The funds I raise will go to the brilliant minds at the Perkins who are committed to finding breakthroughs that will lead to improved health outcomes for those affected by the hardest-to-treat diseases.
Hearing the words “it’s cancer” is heart-wrenching, I should know. But with Perkins researchers, I am determined to eliminate the fear and uncertainty that cancer brings.
My fellow riders will cycle the 200kms on 4th and 5th October and I for one will be willing them on. Many riders return every year because they know that the funds we raise go back to the Perkins. Why not join me in making a difference?
Together, we can conquer cancer.
