I’m on a mission to defeat cancer.

It is my privilege to ride for the Perkins Institute of Medical Research alongside my two sons, Liam Callaway and Jai Callaway. This is the 12th ride for me and the 5th for Liam and Jai, as I reflect on the journey and how far we have come it still feels like we are just beginning…

“Recently, Professor Ruth Ganss and team discovered they could make some of the toughest tumours more responsive to immunotherapy. How? By using current anti-cancer drugs at 100 times lower than standard.

Sounds counterintuitive, I know. Going with a different approach Instead of aggressively attacking the tumour, they changed the environment around it.

What was discovered is promising. By improving the blood vessels around the tumour, they could help immunotherapy get in and do its job more effectively.

Because these anti-cancer drugs are already approved, we’re hopeful we can move quickly to clinical trials — and potentially fast-track better treatments for people with brain, pancreatic and skin cancers.”

This example of dedication from Perkins helps inspire me of what is possible, this year alone Perkins have;

• identified early detection markers for aggressive cancers
• improved surgical outcomes for breast cancer
• launched clinical trials for WA-developed targeted therapies

Cancer remains a devastating disease that affects so many of us, but progress is only made possible by incredible people and precious funds.
