From Cancer Diagnosis to Cancer 200

If you had told me a few years ago that I'd be riding 200 kilometres on a road bike, I would have laughed.

My journey to the MACA 200 started long before I ever clipped into a set of road pedals. For three years, I suffered from recurring kidney stones and ongoing health issues, all while trying to navigate the challenges that came with the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, COVID restrictions significantly delayed the investigations and medical appointments needed to identify the underlying cause of my symptoms.

Eventually, in 2022, shortly after the birth of my first child I received a diagnosis that changed everything – thyroid cancer.

Like many people who hear the word "cancer," I was faced with uncertainty, fear, and a long road ahead. Over the following years, I underwent two operations to remove the cancer and endured the physical and emotional challenges that came with treatment and recovery. Thankfully, after years of monitoring and treatment, I received the news I had been hoping for in early 2026: I was officially given the all clear.

While cancer was one of the strangest challenges I've faced, it also taught me not to take my health, time, or opportunities for granted.

That mindset is a big part of why I'm riding in the MACA Cancer 200.

Last year, a workmate convinced me to sign up even though I had never ridden a road bike in my life. My cycling experience was limited to mountain bikes, and the thought of riding 200 kilometres seemed completely unrealistic. Somehow, with very little training, determination, and support from those around me, I made it to the start line and completed my first MACA Cancer 200.

This year marks my second ride, and it means even more.

The MACA Cancer 200 is an opportunity to give back to a cause that has touched my life personally. It's a chance to support cancer research, patient care, and the families who are facing battles of their own. Every kilometre ridden is a reminder of how fortunate I am to have received a positive outcome and how important it is to support those who are still fighting.

For anyone currently facing cancer, supporting a loved one through treatment, or navigating their own health challenges, I hope my story serves as a reminder that difficult times do pass, progress is possible, and there is always something worth striving towards.

This year, I'll be riding with gratitude, purpose, and a healthy respect for the workmate who talked me into buying my first road bike.
